Before You Buy

Before you buy a Cocker Spaniel, there are some things you should know. Cockers need to be professionally groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. They do not make good outside dogs, they need to be close to their people and will anguish if they are forced into seclusion.

If you leave any coat on your dog, he/she will need to be brushed at the very least, once a week. Bathing with a good dog shampoo is essential for clean healthy skin. You can put your cocker in a comfortable puppy trim which will keep them from matting and keep you from spending hours brushing.

Like all dogs that have ears that flop over, Cocker ears must be cleaned weekly along with their bath in order to keep yeast from forming in the ear canals. A good cleaning lotion can be obtained from your veterinarian.

Teeth should be brushed weekly, and providing a good chew bone will help keep them clean.

Cockers need to be socialized. Like any dog, you can’t keep them isolated in your home and then expect them to be well adjusted when they go out in public. Take your puppy to obedience classes where they will be introduced to strangers while they are young. Invite children to play with your puppy especially if you have none of your own. Dogs of any breed must be exposed to children in order to know how to react to them.

If you have any hesitation in providing these necessities for you cocker, this may not be the breed for you.
